Carrie Smith developed a reputation early in her career as a powerful blues singer in the mold of Bessie Smith. Over the years, Carrie became recognized as a complete jazz singer, and performed with Cab Galloway, Wynton Marsalis, Benny Goodman, Alvin Alley, Clark Terry, BB King and Joe Williams. She starred for several years in the Broadway musical, "Black and Blue," which featured a number of great jazz musicians like Roland Hanna, Jerome Richardson and Grady Tate.
